Many women love jewellery. Who can resist the allure of a sparkling pair of diamond earrings, a bracelet of fine silver or a stone-studded necklace? Before you make a dash for your nearby jewellery shop and grab one, consider that the bulk of your money spent will be gone for good.

No matter how much people say that buying jewellery is a form of investment, those who tire themselves of their ornaments and re-sell them in the future always end up losing a part of their capital.

"Jewellery is like a new car — take it away and lose half the price paid immediately," says Steve Gregory, managing partner at Holborn Assets.

Dubai: It took 3,000 hours, 33,000 coins weighing 160kg and 10kg of glue to decorate a commemorative car, ‘Pride of the Emirates', to mark the 40th UAE National Day.

The total cost of the coins of all denominations — Dh1, 50 fils, 25 fils, 10 fils, 5 fils and 1 fils — is around Dh21,000, probably more than the value of the 1998 model Chevrolet Camaro, which has been completely plastered over with coins

Regulators clamp down on fake mobile phones in Dubai

UAE telcommunication service providers etisalat and du will suspend all services to mobile phone subscribers in Dubai and around the Emirates who are using counterfeit handsets as of January 1, it was announced at a news conference here yesterday.

"Users of fake devices will be imminently contacted by their service providers and all phones that are not type approved will be disconnected from all telecom services, including calls, texts and the internet," said the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in a statement.

"We want the UAE to be clean of fake handsets — the operators have been told," TRA Director-General Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem told reporters.

Dubai Ruler visits Ministry of Public Works

Dubai: A three-phase development programme for remote areas in the UAE was given the go-ahead by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, during an inspection visit to the Ministry of Public Works Sunday.

Shaikh Mohammad ordered the setting up of utilities and an integrated infrastructure in remote areas that will contribute to changing them into advanced urban cities possessing all the elements for providing Emiratis with a dignified life.

He also emphasised the right of the future generations to enjoy the finest level of services the country can give, the same way their fathers are enjoying the fruit of what their forefathers had planted.

Emirates, Etihad flight operations normal despite volcano concerns

Dubai: Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways are operating normal flight services on Monday to Australia and New Zealand as volcanic ash cloud breaks in Chile.
The airspace restrictions around New Zealand forced Emirates into cancelling two of its service – EK418 and EK419 – on Sunday on between Sydney and Christchurch.

“All flights to Australia and New Zealand are currently operating as per schedule. Emirates will continue to monitor the ash cloud caused by Mt. Cordon Caulle in Chile closely, and is currently liaising with the relevant authorities regarding its movement,” an Emirates spokesperson told Gulf News in a statement, adding that passengers are advised to check emirates.com for further updates.
