Studying Arabic in the UAE

dubawi's picture

Due to the increased interest in on-site Arabic tutoring/classes here are a few places you can turn to:

There are several Arabic language institutes in the UAE, most offering intensive courses at different levels. Some are informal and inexpensive while others are certified and internationally recognised.

The price range is Dh20 to Dh80 per hour.

How is it with moving to Dubai from Europe? Are there any possibilities for a scholarship? And how important is french for living in Dubai when not speaking arabic? Is english enough?

airportzombie's picture

Language-wise, English is the lingua franca of the region; you'll get further with English than French. I heard more French in the couple of hours I was at the Céline Dion concert than I have in the 9 months I've been living here. And considering the majority of staff working the customer service industry are from the Philippines or Indian subcontinent (as with any other Gulf state), you'll get a blank stare if you ordered your Big Mac en français. As for scholarships, are you looking to study here, or was it more sponsorship for a job? Knowing a bunch of languages is always good, but unless you specifically work in a language-centred job (translation, tour guide, hotel or travel industry), you can get by with just English. If you've got a few tongues under your belt, then you're in a better position than most to communicate with other expats and tourists.

amwot,

look at this: http://www.fsi-language-courses.com/Arabic.aspx

Levantine Arabic and Saudi Arabic with audio files.

The materiels are free because they were produced by the US govern ment; such products paid by US tax payers's money do not hold copyright, so feel free to download freely.

The Saudi course is based on the dialect they speak in Western Arabia, around Jeddah and Mecca region, while the Levantine is from the region of Syria and Jordan
