Hello everyone,

I am planning to move to Dubai by the end of February. I work in the area of recruitment in the construction industry (in an agency sort of establishment). I have recently been hearing a lot of talk about job losses hitting Dubai - it seems this will not make my job easy in getting clients.

Could anyone here please give me some advice or information on the scope of job losses in Dubai. Is the consturction ndustry being hit very hard by the worldwide economic slump?

I need this info so that I can make up my mind on whether to sign the contract.

THANKS!!

Dubai has got  3 major property developers: Nakheel, Emaar and Dubai Properties. Hundreds of people of tehir staff have been laid off recently. Of course, the projects that are in the ground will keep on. But the projects that are in the planning stage only will be delayed most probably.
Unfortunately, as your question pertains Recruitment, I think you would be relying on those future project to recruit staff, right?

As I see things, even if they are not spoken directly here (not by the Government certainly) it doesn't look like an opportune time to be in the construction business in Dubai at this particular moment. Be careful before signing a cotnract, get all the info possible on all of your expenses.

Best of luck.

I think Dubai will have a few problems this year - growth, for one, is expected to be just 0.5% as opposed the previous forecast of over 2%. So there will be some trouble but definitely Dubai stands a better chance of weathering the storm than many other places in the world, so don't despair. Do your homework and if the numbers stack up, come along.
