Unbelievable! The Brits are going to prison
Here's what the press says:
The two Britons, who are both in their 30s and met at an
all-you-can-drink champagne brunch before the alleged incident
occurred, were arrested in July and later charged with sex outside of
marriage, public indecency and drunkenness.
what these folks are charged with may not be everyones ideal of romance but
i'm focusing my commentary on the laws against public displays of
affection.
how can you invest multi-billions of dollars into what is supposed to
be the newest global tourist hotspot destination and maintain laws
against public displays of affection??? imagine having laws against
holding hands in Paris. absurd!
Paris maintains, year after year and through recession, one of the
biggest and oldest tourism institutions in the world. the tourist
segment of the Paris economy is based on one single word: Romance. how
can Dubai maintain this new tourism economy by censoring that kind of
simplicity in life that brings so many couples together?
Also: Have you seen prostitutes and escorts roaming around hotels and bars?
some openly performing more than just simple, affectionate kissing. so? are they trying to teach westerners a lesson here?

This
demonstrates that when in other nations, you need to know the laws and
what punishments are when you break the laws. That is all. Demmers, are you
trying to get people here to say those evil arabs, how dare
they? Westerners too often think they can dictate to others how
to live, I don't subscribe to that thinking. Tell me where it is legal anyway to have sex in public??...I can't
think of anyplace, but I could be wrong... tell me
It's their country; If you don't like the laws don't go!
In other words, when in Dubai, do as the Dubawis do, if you don't like it, stay in Rome
)
Don't
be so quick to judge, I still find it
gross how some people in the WEST have no shame and show gross displays of public
affection- really i don't need to see you make out on the train.
if you don't like it- don't go to Dubai.
The West needs to stop judging the Middle east and other countries based on what the West thinbks is right and normal.
well, I haven't seen any mention of a ban on showing affection like holding hands and
sex-outside-marriage that will result in prison in any tourist
brochures I have read.
I think it's time these things be mentioned in tourism brochures and ads about Dubai. This publicity will spread the word that the buildings are modern, but the society is not.... Think about it.
what exactly do you mean by a modern society? do you mean that we take off our clothes and roam naked, show our affection in public????
wait till the arabs too want a piece of your women!!!!!!!!
i hope you be modern enough then to be able to part with them.
there is a limit to every freedom, but the West's concept of the word has driven it to the limit of beastliness!!!!!!!
dont try to wake up the beasts in the Arabs. i warn you, you will regret. really. really regret!!!!!!!!!
dont try to wake up the beasts in the Arabs. i warn you, you will regret. really. really regret!!!!!!!!!
What do you mean by that, khanalarab? What you re saying is nothing good about Arabs. And are you threatening?
hi everyone,
i think that it is the culture that is prevalent in uae to frame such laws. if am not not wrong most muslims countries would be strict on such scenes and behaviours and that is why women have been given great respect in these countries and any thing affecting them mentally or physically is dealt strictly. any visitor should be aware of the local customs and rules that is prevalent in the place he is visiting. Ignorance of law is no excuse is what the law makers have framed and made mandatory to respect the culture. this is only my brief idea about this issue. culture is something that shows a way people have followed in the past and is not something that can be easily transformed or carried away to places. Globalisation should not be taken in the wrong sense.
This is the normal case, five months ago a case happenend same like this, if u are living in a foreign country you have to know the rules & regulations, we need to obey that rules,,,,,,,,,,ok
They must obey the rules and RESPECT THE ISLAMIC COURTESY as long as they live in an Islamic country! They r just a vistor, even they got their job, even they got their residence, for UAE people they r just a travelers and must follow UAE Shari'ah. None force them to come in UAE and do such shameful things!
i am from the us. and in response to you abdulqader it is not legall anywere to have sex in public. we are more open to relations everywhere like there is something to prove. i personally hate the enviroment i am in here and think that the society here is disgusting. i also feel that if you are going to travel you need to visit other places and respect their culture as well as be an ideal model for your own country. the country im living in (us) has definitel been known for not representing themselfs correctly. but just so i can add. not everyone here is like this. these people were wrong to do this and were rightfully punished. i love the respect and culture of the east for being faithful and consistant in their relations and mairrage. i wish people here could learn these important values.
much love and peace.
goblynqueen,
i respect your views about the culture here, and i can see that you like it.
about the West, their being "too open" about relations is perhaps the only reason why the family structre has collapsed.
people are happy to have children out of wedlock.
look at shows like "Moment of Truth" and all, which openly encourage or should i say entice people to disclose in open, in front of millions of people, things that might as well ruin their marriages and relationships.
i cannot think of a better example to all this than a jungle or a pig farm -- sorry to say!!!!!!!!!!
but then i am afraid Muslim societies too are moving in the very direction.
trying to imitate the West means following its culture too.
there is indeed a dichotomy in our societies. i just wish we realise it in the early stages and work for a remedy before it's too late!!!!!!!!
khanalarab,
i completely agree and have been faced with this downfall myself unfortunately. i wish things to be better for my children. i also wish there was some way i could fix it. however i am stuck and i would not wish the people of your area to have to fall and sucum to this aweful behavior. i am also in favor of that remedy. i almost wish i had enough to get a coloney of people to live in an area like a gated community and keep our children in a family of love and respect. until such remedies exist i just try to talk to them openly and imediately if we are faced with this situation in public. i also agree that it is just like regressing to an animalistic state. no offense taken . what you do in the privacy of your own home with your spouse is your buisness, but when you bring it arround the public you are sharing to much information.
thank you for your insight.
much love

good to see a clean discussion by goblynqueen and khanalarab. there is nothing wrong when matured people open up discussion like this which would ultimately favour the society and its wellness. and hope to see much ideas from everyone on various topics. keep going.
If it was just a case of "holding hands" it would have gone unnoticed, however what they did was totally unacceptable. They were warned by the police once anyway..whatever Dubai is now it is STILL a *muslim* country.
apparently, the question is finally resolved. they''ll be fined just 1,000 Dhs, and be deported. I read somewhere they vowed to get married when they go back to the UK or something like that .. very funny case
This has been a joke from the start This sort of behavior is not tolerated
in most parts of the world (western included), so why would anybody expect a different treatment from a Muslim country. The guys and the woman are certainly quite lucky to get away with only this fine and all the embarassment in the media.
omg .. they are still talking about this stupid case... they have become media stars..soon they'll offer them contracts for writing a book, produce a film. the world is crazy!!!!
they shud hve styed in jail. anyway 3 mnths is not many.. ther were children on the beach ..
I totally agree and respect with the rules in Emirate and in
other Islamic countries however once again... westerns do bad, they get bailed
out... and eastern maybe think of doing bad (or not)... they stay in for 8
years without a trial and deportation to their native country which won’t even
take them.... the hypocrisy of the democracy they serve in west???
Well currently I live in UK and had my schooling in US and
Canada and awesome places except the bureaucracy…. Government doesn’t really
care what happens as long as pockets are being filled and people on the top are
making money.
Take smoking…. Why don’t west ban it? Cas smoking makes
money… people die of smoking each year… but no why would they… it would stop a
trillion $ trade worldwide….
Drinking…. Is the same story… I worked for police in UK as
data base administration and amount of accidents due to drunks…. But why would
the government ban that… come on…. If they ban that, money would stop again…. And
these things lead to….
Gun crime on the high… cops know where the bad guys are…
just not orders YET to raid… cas if they do… cops would go out of job…. So why
do that…
Drugs… same thing….. They can find Saddam in a bunker in
Iraq and they can’t track down drug factories…. Who you kidding…
Prostitution….. Again know where the hookers are, rather
than training them or providing them with adequate help, they are left to rot
in cold or HIV….
And so many other little issues… so who ever says western
society is perfect… far from it not because they are not traditional or bad…
because they are not shown the right direction… compared to Islamic society…. The
rules are already there… us Muslims just need to play by them… and be model
citizens for the future…. But as in Quran (holy books for Muslims for those who
don’t know)… that is not going to happen
as all the minor signs of day are judgement are here…
I was almost going to agree with you mohammednisr on what you said until I reached the part wheere you say in effect that ISLAM IS THE WAY TO GO.. "the rules are already there us... Muslims just need to play by them".
People like books like the Quran and the Bible and believe everything written there without questioning because it's easier not to think than to think. If the rules are there, as you say, then you don't have to think on how to solve your problems (Muslim societies have many problems, or not?), it's all in the book, let's not think, just follow the book.
I will not go on to list just a few of the problems facing pious, God-fearing, Muslim societies (like Saudi Arabia, where every weekend Saudis cross the bridge to Bahrain to "have fun", where fun=drink&hookers).
Dubai courts are very lenient. <Maybe because the couple is British/white. No matter how drunk, these chaps hsould have known to respect the laws. They give westerners a bad name in the middle east
yes, I think so.. if the perpetrators of this thing were arabs, the Dubai courts would be more strictly applying the sharia laws
