She burst on to the music scene as a teen sensation, battled a breakdown to retain her crown as the queen of pop and now Britney Spears could be heading to Dubai for the climax of her comeback tour.
The organiser of Spears’ big-top Circus world tour, AEG, told 7DAYS that it wants Dubai to be the very last date in the megastar’s diary.
AEG Middle East chief executive, Thomas Ovesen, said his company was trying hard to bring Britney to the UAE.
But he said that there were still major logistical problems to overcome before such a large-scale performance could take place in the emirate.
He said: “We are looking at dates but as it is a very complex tour and it’s a show that’s needs a central stage, there are a lot of logistical challenges. You wouldn’t believe the amount of equipment involved. But I would like it to happen.”
The concert would be a massive coup for Dubai, which has had to look on as neighbouring Abu Dhabi landed major acts such as George Michael, Elton John Coldplay and Bon Jovi in recent months.
Spears launched the European leg of her comeback tour in London last night and critics have welcomed her back with rave reviews of the two-hour show.
The tabloid favourite is known for her raunchy dance moves and risqué costumes, with one review describing the Circus tour as being packed with “sex, fire and stomp-and-slither choreography”.
But the diva will have to cover up her corset and censor the snake-hips if she is to avoid the kind of controversy courted by the likes of American rapper Akon.
The star recently sparked outrage when he stripped off his T-shirt on stage at a gig in Media City, despite agreeing to abide by government rules against nudity.
Ovesen, whose firm brought Kylie and Justin Timberlake to the UAE, said: “The Circus concerts are very theatrical shows and any big show that comes through here would have to be acceptable to the market. As with any artist, she would be fully briefed about the guidelines.
“It’s possible there might have to be some tweaks to the current show,” he added.
An official at Dubai Tourism and Commerce Department said artists have to agree to follow the country’s moral code in order to obtain a licence for the show.
Meanwhile, the news of a potential concert has been welcomed by fans.
Fahad Al Rasheed, 18, is one of the founding members of a Spears’ appreciation group for her Arab fans and was thrilled at the prospect of her Middle East performance.
“Everyone wants her here, she’s amazing,” he said. “She has so many fans in this part of the world and we are desperate for her to come. I love her and Dubai would be a great venue.”
