Life In Dubai

Anonymous's picture

I have visited Dubai once last year, and I was there for only a short while. What impressed me overall was the vital mix of cultures there. I learned a lot in those few days about people in this part of the world. I admired that Dubai was said to be 21% nationals, and had over 160 other country nationals living and working there. This is what attracts me to Dubai. It is their willingness to be diverse and share with diverse cultures. I want to return to Dubai, but not to visit, I want to live and work there. I am wanting to hear from anyone who has 1st hand information and experience from living and working in Dubai for at least 1-3 years.

I visited UAE twice-once as a tourist, next as a business trip. I must admit first time I spent my time in Sharja in hotel-it was great!!!! but I couldn't understand all types of people and local living in UAE. The other time was my business trip-and that was the possibility to deep into problems of people who work and live there. I mean not local people who are very proud of themselves, I mean people from India,Philippeanes and Russia who work hard to earn for their living!

I was preposed to stay in UAE to work in touristic field but I was afraid of troubles. Now maybe I will agree because I have friends from Khaleej (Gulf region) and they always help me.

Unfortunately so. The social structure here is somewhat similar to the caste system but that is slowly changing now as people begin to understand each other. Generally speaking, the salary and packages you're getting, and the way you are being treated (by strangers) will largely depend on your nationality and your looks. The sad fact is such discrimination is also practised by the Indian Subcontinental people and Philipinos themselves.

I have just come back from Dubai and I will never go back.

There is no culture there and it is total chaos.

You can not get a taxi and there appears to be some kind of discrimination going on by Indian taxi drivers not wanting to stop for muslim who are in traditional dress (Islamic).  If you do get a taxi you have to listen ot hindi music sung by women with high pitched voices which not nice. Every taxi I got into we were subjected to this treatment.

If you want to go to City Centre Mall you can expect to join a queue for a taxi with a wait of up to 45 minutes!  There are people jumping the queue and if you are a muslim in traditional dress you will be subjected to tourists taking your photo as though you are a photo opportunity because there are so few gulf people in Dubai compared to the overseas workers.

Each person I spoke to complained about their work conditions and terms of employment.  There is no culture there and it appears everyone there is a visitor or drafted in labour force.

Think carefully before taking up a position.  Dubai has changed so much since my first visit in 2003.  Imagine the above then add temperatures up to 40 degree c.  If you want this then take up a post in India.  There are parts of Dubai  such as Diera that look just like India with ghetos and poverty.  Some parts are a no go zone for muslims due to  total hostility towards muslims - possibly because the Indian workforce feel exploited.

The world is an oyster and Dubai is only one of the 7 Emirates where you can go.  Also give consideration to Oman which I have visted twice.  Oman, for me is  total heaven in terms of culture, organisation and dealing with local people who want to represent their country and ensure you experience only the best they have to offer.

it is a pitty to hear that u have not enjoyed ur stay in Dubai. Yes, Dubai has changed and it is still changing. Some people say for the better, while some say for the worse in the end it depends on the people and their opinions. As many people as many opinions u r going to hear.

I am very surprised to hear about discrimination of the muslim dress .. I beleive u r referring to abaya. All the Gulf nationals, Shami (Syrian, Palestinian, Jordanian etc) and majority of Muslims here from other parts of the world - wear abayas, and if all of them would be frowned upon or would be discriminated against - Dubai wouldnt be Islamic country. Though it is being very western these days, most of the things that are being done here are according to Shari'ah laws.

Temprature reaches 50 degree C, but any place u go to, there are A/Cs.

Regarding the Taxis .. well everyone knows that there is a problem. Have u tried to ask the driver to change the channel? Because u have a complete right to do so. If not, u can always call and complain. The problem is, alot of people are either afraid to speak up or can't bother to do so and that is why u face those problems in the end.

And again .. im really sorry for ur disappointment
