The rate of fee increases allowed for private schools in Dubai for the academic year 2009-2010 will be directly linked to their overall performance.
According to a comprehensive system of fee regulation announced on Wednesday by The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the best performing schools can hike their fee up to 15 per cent while those found ‘unsatisfactory’ or ‘acceptable’ will have to settle for seven and nine per cent increase respectively.
The schools that fall under the category ‘good’ will get the go ahead for a 12 per cent increase in 2009.
Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB) have classified schools into four category - Unsatisfactory, Acceptable, Good and Outstanding – after assessing their performance in seven areas that included the overall performance of the school, attainment, students’ progress, personal and social development, teaching and learning, curriculum and school leadership.
And the results shall determine the allowed tuition adjustment for each school, while taking into consideration the annual operational costs of schools that range between 5 to 7 per cent.
"DSIB will conclude all the inspections of private schools in Dubai by March 30, excluding 25 private schools that follow the Indian and Pakistani curriculum and six Iranian schools. Furthermore, based on the current inspections, we will report all the results which provide public commentary on school quality in Dubai by May 17, 2009,” Jameela Al Muhairi, Chief of DSIB said.
The private schools following the Indian and Pakistani curriculum, whose academic year begins in April, will follow the Ministerial Decree 1/203 for the year 2008 and the allowed tuition adjustment is five per cent to 10 per cent for the year only. Their fees will be finalised later after assessing their performance by the Dubai School Inspection Bureau. Inspections at these schools will start once the new academic year commences.
