It is a bit interesting topic, which is more influencing, Culture or beliefs?

Do beliefs form cultures or cultures form beliefs?

The beliefs are part of the culture... Thus, the beliefs form the culture. But the beliefs were at the beginig, in ancient times, they made the culture and now we can say that the culture is the one who is influencing.

aren't they one and the same?

Culture isnt the same as beliefs...culture is wat ppl have been passed on by their ancestors and thats wat they have seen their parents follow too. Nowadays ppl tend to mix culture with beliefs and do wrong things in the name of religion and faith. Culture no doubt has the upper hand these days since most ppl arent open to change but for me my religion & beliefs are more important.

belief in oneself leads to faith, thus through faith we follow culture , which avoids us to fall from doing sin. culture brings oneness among us.

funny, being from the west i think that my set of beliefs (religion) has been so entwined with my culture that they're almost the same. The social and behavioral values my culture puts forward as being the right way to act to eat, to live is the same as my religion. Probably because (Iam muslim) Islam or any religion for that matter is a way of life.

Most cultures, from pakistan, india, even the gulf countries have A LOT in common. Why? I believe its b/c we share the same faith and that has had a big impact on the kind of food we eat (no pork or alcohol), the kind of activities we indulge in for entertainment (no clubbing here :p ), behavior between the sexes and btwn young people and old people, also the kinds of clothes we wear (sorry ladies no miniskirts). It has even impacted art which is a big part of a people's culture, cultures which have been Islamicized so to speak have had to alter their culture and this is where Islamic Art has developed from. So I do think as far as the Mideast/ east is concerned your beliefs and culture are pretty much the same. In India art, tradition, clothing, food (all cultural things) are notably different btwn Muslim Indians, and Hindu Muslims even though they are all Indians.

Anyway i hope through this long spiel u can understand my point at how religion and culture esp. Islam which has impacted so many people to an extent has sort of its own culture which is promoted through religion regardless of their ethnic background.
