Anybody heard of this case in the local UAE media? I, for one, haven't.
ABC News: The video shows someone "mercilessly torturing a man with whips, electric cattle prods and wooden planks with protruding nails." Later he "pours salt on the man's wounds and then drives over him with his Mercedes SUV."

There are many reasons somebody could videotape himself torturing someone else. One would be to view them later for pleasure. Another would be to show to others that he "means business".
Funny, I could find a mention of this in the local newspapers I follow.
tape is blurry, that is no evidence, it all looks too staged for truth. People in west are jealous of the way UAE developed. This is just another thing against us, after the British article from a week ago
oh, man! disgusting! and our liberals back in the US think waterboarding is bad. Our torture is done on murderers who killed people, and want to kill more. They want to bomb buses in Pakistan for playing music. Remember how many people were killed over a stupid cartoon!! I remember a Nigerian Christian was burned alive for... being Christian at the time when the cartoons got published in a obscure Danish newspaper. As a Muslim who has lived in UAE for quite some time, and in the UK I can assure you in the UK elected people are accountable. In the UAE nobody among the rulers is accountable. Very sad state of affairs. Shame on you emirs and shaikhs driving luxurious cars, living in opulent palaces (with so much gold and so little taste and coziness) torturing and/or condoning the torturing of people (and in this case the victim is a Muslim!)

Totally appalling. Instead of coveringit up the govt should investigate it and ostracize those black sheep of the family so that their royal name is not tarnished any further... as far as I know the late Sheikh Zayed was a man of honour and dignity.
When I judge Dubai and UAE, I judge on the image it tries to present to the West: a place of technology, multiculturalism, equal oportunity, business, rapid development, super facilities.

As a Muslim and human I feel sympathy for this poor man who was tortured. But this stupid Sheikh's behavior has nothing to do with being Arab. Remember it was an Arab who leaked this tape so there are good and bad in every race, and community and we can not generalize.
This act is utterly condemnable and the cruel Sheikh must be brought to justice. Torture and cruelty happens everywhere and by all peoples so please stop generalizing.

I could not understand why every body specially media (specially western) relating all the stupid acts done by some mentally discards persons to Islam or Muslims or Muslim world?
There are hundred of stupid and nonhuman behavior cases daily in world. Why not in Media? Why not issue? Where is Human rights?
So many Muslims are drinking around the world, so many Muslim women are going without hijaab on streets and so on, but they also know that what Islam says.
Please make clear that Islam is a religion and way of living it is not guard. If some body not follow it, no body can force to obey.
Mental discard activities are not related to Islam it can be in any religion and it is happening around the world but not in media. 70 yrs of old man is rapping 8 yrs of girls. Women are giving torture to men in the name of sexual fantasy. Similarly men are using women to take sexual advantages etc. around the world daily in non islamic countries and by non Islamic people.
So it is just to disturb Muslims and Islamic world as they are very sensitive in religion matter. Just forget all these issues, Photos, Videos, Articles. Just walk in the path of Allha and Siratal Mustakeem.

After viewing the tape I come to my own conclusion.
When I was watching the tape, being a muslim and I read the Quraan which described the picture of Pre-Islamic Arab world, where rich people use to give torture to slaves.
When Islam reestablished and all the nonhuman activities and inequalities were finished.
It seems that the person, I don't care who is, completely out of Islam, non muslim, and came from the same pre-Islamic world in the land of Islam.

you're right ilhak . it is not about the religion, there are such people in Christian countries too, and in other countries, where the predominant religion is Hinduism or Buddhism,... But it does tell you something about the royal family, and how spoiled kids are there. He must have had everything and given everything whenever he wants, and when things do no to go as he expects then what? let's torture!
it's possible that this is used as propaganda to blur/move the lines between what is torture and what is not. Specifically what happens in this awful video is much more severe than what US interrogators are accused of , so this is a way of suggesting that the bar for calling something torture is much higher than the so called 'enhanced interrogation techniques'.
