The xpress4me reports that Dubai will be blocking websites based on some 500 keywords, which are not disclosed to the public. Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim says: “Our statistics show the dangerous effect of such websites on our youth.”
He also stressed that Dubai didn’t ask Google to censor or block pornographic and vulgar websites.
He was responding to recent reports that Doha Centre for Media Freedom asked Google to reject Dubai police’s request to block certain websites deemed contrary to cultural and social norms in the UAE.
Tamim denied that he talked to Giselle Hescuk, Google’s head of development for Europe and the Middle East.
However, he added: “Maj. Gen. Khamis Mattar Al Muzeina has met Hescuk and discussed things in general.”
Tamim said that while Doha Centre seeks to protect vulgarity as a legal right, he believes it expresses neither the Qatar government’s nor the nationals’ point of view towards these websites.
