Without any formal announcement, the minimum taxi fare becomes 10Dhs with immediate effect from today. This doesn't mean that the minimum starting fare has changed - it stays the same at 4Dhs. It means that if your trip is too short to make 10Dhs, it WILL be 10Dhs. Obviously, passengers whose fare is more than Dh10 will not be affected with this new policy.
Why is this coming now? Apparently many taxi drivers were complaining recently about short trips wasting their time, reflecting badly on their daily minimum targets.
Anyway, it's exactly what people need in these times of economic hardship.

Will this involve an improvement in the attitude of rude drivers? And won't this encourage people to go for the illegal taxis.
Nobody expected this. They should have declared it at least 2 weeks in advance so people know and not get this unpleasant surprise ...Is the taxi owners are more important than all people living in Dubai?
it becomes a nightmare to find a cab for a short distance.. most drivers want to go for a long distance so they can complete their targets (and get a tip, as if they deserved it). Why didn't the RTA ask the taxi companies to reduce theit daily targets to reduce the burden on the taxi drivers? They shud have considered the curent economic climate, decline in tourism, and so on. Definitaly not a good decision!
If they agree on this new rules will the cab-driver stop when I wave him to stop, will the drivers behave nicely with us, will they come in time when I make a reservation?
And the the minimum to Sharjah is 20 AED, so if you go to Sharjah then the meter starts at 20Dhs and goes up from there.
