Do people tip in spas and beauty salons in Dubai?

As so many of us are unsure of the tipping practice in Dubai, it is often a matter that causes quite a debate. “Do I leave a tip”, “Is a tip already included in the cost of my service”, “How much should I leave” are all questions that many clients ask themselves. Overall clients do tip in Dubai but it’s still their own choice of how much and when they want to give a tip. 60 % of our clients at Beauty Within do leave a tip as appreciation of a good service received.If a tip is not given it doesn’t necessarily mean that a poor service was received, it’s just not in some people’s nature to tip .

How do tips compare here to different countries??
Our Hair Stylists from South Africa receive more tips here than they would in their home country. Whereas our Hair Stylists from Lebanon and Tunisia have noticed that they are receiving fewer tips in Dubai than in their home countries. Both British Beauty Therapists receive more tips here than they would in the U.K as tipping hardly ever occurs for beauty services but Hair Stylists in the UK always receive a tip. In the Phillipines it is also common to leave a tip after a service for both beauty and hair services.

What percentage is a standard tip in Dubai??
There is no standard procedure of how much a client should leave as a tip. If a 10% service charge is automatically added clients do not tend to feel inclined to give an additional tip, they recognize it as already being added. Whereas if no service charge was added the client could leave a tip to the amount they felt adequate, whether it is more or less than the 10%.

Why clients don’t tip…
Some clients feel they already pay so much for the service that they don’t feel it’s necessary to leave a tip. Other clients again only pay with credit cards and don’t always carry cash on them. As Dubai doesn’t have a standard tipping procedure clients are uncertain of whether they should leave a tip or not.

Who do I give the tip to and when?
The tip can be given at reception when the client pays for the service, where it will then be passed onto the appropriate member of staff. Or it can be given directly to the Hair Stylist or Beauty Therapist, after the service, before paying.

Who do I tip and will it go directly to the Hair stylist or Beauty Therapist?
It is completely up to the customer if they would like to tip all of the staff involved in their service, however in busy salons/spas you will often get someone different washing your hair, colouring, cutting or making you your refreshments, this can then turn into quite an expense for the customer. Tips will go directly to the Hair Stylist or Beauty Therapist that the client has asked for it to go to.

How much tip should I leave?
Remembering that a tip is a way of showing your appreciation to the Hair Stylist or Beauty Therapist for the good service that you have received. Previous clients have awarded staff between 10 dhs and 50 dhs depending on the service. During the festive seasons some customers will tip up to 100dhs and often give a gift to the Stylist or Therapist.

I leave some tip although I have my special opinion about tipping. I think it's better if tipping is included in the price of the service. The same for tipping waiters in restaurants - why tip the waiter but not tip the cook? If the food is great, I think you must tip the cook, but has anybody tip the cook? I haven't heard. So it's better if these people, waiters, beauty salon stylist, etc. receive good salaries and do not wait for tips.

I am not very sure how good or not it is to tip, but I do tip; I am used to it.

In case you want to know the spas for men in Dubai:

* H20 at Emirates Towers H2O
* Aviation Club, in Deira, behind Irish Village
* The Fairmont Spa
* Cleopatra's at the Wafi

BTW spas are segregated in Dubai as required by law.

I usually tip. The amount of the tip depends on the service charge as well lol and ofcourse depends on the service itself! Cool

Hair transplant surgery is fast becoming a popular choice of procedure for both men and women who have been affected by hair loss. Losing your hair, especially for men, might appear to be a minor problem but there are many people who find it difficult to accept. This leads to frustration, anxiety and depression. Some people find that they become isolated as a result and are unable to discuss their feelings about this with anyone for fear of ridicule. But losing your hair is no laughing matter. Some people are happy to wear a wig or even go bald but others find that having a full head of hair is part of their identity. Your hair is a statement of who you are; your status, age and position in society
