I don't really know about animals committing suicide on purpose, but I know that
animals will suffer some kind of depression if they lose their
partners. There are enoug studies to prove animal depresion.

As for humans (whoa re also animals, don't youthink?), I witnessed my grandmother passing
away at 68, then my grandfather just melted away depressed, and in a few
months he was gone at the age of 70

We spent a lotn of money on experts and comfort for grandpa, but it's really hard for a man to recover from this kind of
tragedy, specially when he was married for 45 years with the same
person.

So, tTo answer the question, NO! Depression is the killer, not suicide.

For those bird pet lovers out there is best to find them a mate quickly.

apparently some whales drift ashore (on purpose) in attempt to
"take matters in their own hands", although this is yet to be explained
as a scientific suicidal phenomena wihtin mammals. Quite stunning if
they prove it to be true as these whales would be doing it on purpose ,
which means that advanced perception and reasoning is not only limited
to humans.

then again, you've got suicing humans; and since humans are mammals,
and mammals are animals indeed, so you do have suiciding animals after
all ;)

yes there are some animals that committing suicide too, specially
if their partners leave or died like love birds, guinea pigs...

I have never been witnessed or heard of it but i think suicide is against the natural process. Animals grow and die natural way, therefore, there is no reason for them to die, if anyone get any wound they get sick and slowly they die.

Animal does not have idea like, eating poison, using knife, using wires to hand or jumping from building. therefore, animals dies natual way or slaughtered or killed by others.

I do agree w/ you Zaz...

all we know why some people commit suicide, the feeling of loss of someone or something is

only peculiar to the human kind... if animals had such feelings as much as they could

reason just like us, human beings, they wouldn't be classified as animals...

mirkat's picture

I am not sure if the feeling of loss is peculiar only to human kind. I have myself seen examples of dogs and cats visibly being distraught when their respective owners died (actually, even a few days before the owner would die).

Aren't humans animals? It's just that we, the humans, do not like classifying ourselves as animals.

hi,

i have heard that there are love birds. if a partner dies, the other too sacrifices it life and commits suicide. iam not sure how much its true, but i heard so. apart from that i hardly think that there is a chance for animals to know even a concept called suicide exists.

There are many cases of whales or dolphins "committing suicide" by going in mass to the beaches. It could be because of pollution that their radar-like sensory organs do not function well and they get disoriented. This article explains
