Dubai will have another addition in its long and
vibrant list of tourist attractions. Queen Elizabeth 2, the world’s
grand ocean liner, has embarked on its last voyage for Dubai’s port en
route the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal. But the vessel, which
will be turned into a “floating hotel, retail and entertainment
destination” at the Palm Jumeirah in the following weeks, is not just
any ocean liner whose grandeur will draw hordes of residents and
tourists.
It is a ship with a long and memorable navigational history and is
arguably one of the most celebrated ships and one of the last
Transatlantic ocean liners around. Since its maiden journey in 1969, it
has covered a staggering expanse of 5.6 million nautical miles in
international waters. In four decades, its passengers have included
high-profile leaders, celebrities and prominent personalities,
including Nelson Mandela and some of the Beatles. The
world celebrated the last itinerary of the ship which has carried 2.5
million passengers until now, with nostalgia and pride.
