Dozens of abandoned cars have been removed from the streets of Dubai in a sweep by the municipality.
Among the vehicles seized were were eight lorries as well as a variety of cars, which had all been left by the side of the road for months.
The move is part of the four-day Clean Up the World campaign 2009, which was launched by Dubai Municipality on Tuesday.
In total, 40 vehicles were found in different parts of Dubai with 35 companies helping to tow them away to the municipality’s scrapyard in Al Qusais. And an official from the municipality warned that they would tow more cars away if they were left on the roads.
“We issue a notice and a warning to the owner to remove the vehicle. If no-one comes forward, then we will tow away the vehicle to the scrapyard. We wait for one and half months before removing the vehicle,” said Yaqoob Mohammed Al Ali, chief co-ordinator of the campaign.
He added that abandoned vehicles were an eyesore.
Abandoned vehicles have become more and more common on the emirate’s roads in the past year.
It is believed that some of the vehicles have been left by residents after they became unable to meet loan repayments or find a buyer.
“I see a number of vehicles near my home and other places. No one knows where the owner is. Such vehicles are seen everywhere in Dubai,” said a resident who lives in Discovery Gardens.
