I have been working in one so called five star hotel for the last 3 yrs as a front desk agent. For the first two yrs evrything went well, my duty shifts being on rotation basis. I worked very hard and was even nominated as the best employee for the first year. However after two yrs the night manager was promoted as the asst front office manager and i was unofficially told to take his place without any written confirmation nor salary increase. Since the last 1 year i work continious night shifts to the best of my ability without any benefits only false promises which have seriously affected my healthand when i went to the general manager and told him that i am finding it extremely difficult to continue and requested for duty rotation, his answer was simple, if you dont like just quit. Please advise me under such circumstances what should i do as i cannot quit because of my children, do i deserve this for being nominated as the best employee?. Am i am entilled for extra pay for working night shifts? Please advise friends

This is appalling! I think, as anybody reading about your plight will certainly agree, that they are exploiting you, and have put you in a 'take it or leave it' situation. I would leave, but only if assured another job,,, and you have children to provide for.. it is difficult. I haven't been in the hospitality business, but I hope you can find another better-paying, less stressful job where you and your work would appreciated.

Thank you very much for your kind suggestion, its only because of people like you that this world is still good enough to live in

what can I say? I haven't worked in hotels, but I guess that in these times of economic downturn, it is not easy to find a new job, but you SHOULD KEEP LOOKING FOR A JOB!! Coz where you're working is not a good place, definitely. You're being abused. Nighshift is paid more than a dayshift.

here in Canada a simple threat to call the authorities would work and they would reconsider paying you accordingly but I guess in Qatar it is not the same... think well what is best for you and your family

thank you sir, i wish i was born in canada and if god really appreciates my sacrifice one day i will still be there. God bless all

regarding immigration to Canada you can check this site http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/index.asp It is the governmental site, there are others that charge you something for providing nothing of value; all the info you need is on this site available for free. You can also contact the Embassy of Canada in Qatar.

I have a friend who got permanent residency in Canada. I do not know what your situation is exactly, but the whole process is based on points; for university degree you get some points, if you have a relative in Canada - you get some more points (but that is not a prerequisite), more years of working experience - more points, etc etc.

yeah, as far as I know it's not that difficult to immigrate to Canada if you have the right skills. They need people with skills and (some) work experience. While in the US we get Mexican unskilled manpower...

unfortunately I can help in any way but to sympathize with you, james. look for another job. Maybe one way to find a job through some friends or acquaintances, ask your friends if anybody knows of a vacancy in another hotel? But in Qatar how easy is it to change jobs. As far as I know, you have to get some letter from your current employer or something like this. I think in Dubai it's like this. Anyway, I only travel there once in a long while

Thanks for the concern my friend, u know how the system in qatar is i mean the contract system which does not allow the employee to work somewhere else even though i am sure i can get a good job in any good hotel and this is what encourages them to exploit or blackmail us. Anyway i am sure that there is light after every dark tunnel, thank u again

jamesfernandes, I just heard of a new law passed in Bahrain cancel the sponsorship system of hiring people. From August onwards employees will not have to have a sponsor, the labor market will be free in Bahrain. I don't know if this helps you in anyway, but apparently Bahrain will be the first Gulf country to become more civilized in this respect... who knows maybe Qatar and Dubai and the rest follow suit.
